Final Blogpost

The semester is coming to an end. I spent the past twelve weeks learning what I first deemed as "what everyone already know, but few have mastered". Indeed, it was not an easy task.

After twelve weeks of continuous learning of communication skills and applying them to real life situations, I am glad to say that this module has helped me tremendously with many aspects.

Firstly, having had a group report done, and prepared an oral presentation, I have witnessed first hand how the communication skills that we learn in class was put into use. For example, many times during the group work, there had been conflict of ideas and opinions. Also there had been times when communication simply broke down between two parties. However, it was when the two people involved took a step back, and reflected on better ways to handle the situation, that we saw the dynamics of interpersonal relations in play. I saw my teammates practise active listening, constructive exchange of ideas, and contructive criticisms.

Also, as I am in the midst of applications of further studies, the skills that we learned in writing resumes and curriculum vitae helped me tremendously. I avoided many unnecessary mistakes and am now able to present myself to my future employer text-book perfect letters. The course has also prepared me very well for interview sessions that i foresee coming. The course had helped me to build my confidence and aid in my preparation for the interviews.

All in all, I found this module very insightful and definitely useful.

It is interesting to hear that you are preparing for further studies. Will you be taking your masters? Or going over to DUKE medical school?

I agree with you that this module has indeed given us the relevant skills that we need, not only for job/ school applications, but also for our work life in the near future.

It was great meeting you!

Hello Yu Yin

It is good to know that you have benefitted much from this module.

I do agree that we will be able to craft "text book perfect" resumes and curriculum vitae for different jobs. It was only in this module that I learnt that cover letters and resumes are job specific!

I look forward to your presentation tommorrow! All the best!

Hi Yu Yin!

Learning how to write resumes and application letter was really useful in this course. Before taking this module, I did not know that a cover letter or application letter was necessary, and my resume was four pages long. I used to think that "one resume fits all", and my resume looked almost the same for many years. (I wonder if that was the reason to why my past application for internship was not successful?)

Doing the group research project was really fun! Like you have said, we had the chance to put the communication skills into practice. It was a little awkward in the beginning, when we exercised active listening in our first meeting and could not interrupt the members speaking. However, the situation got better and my group worked relatively well together. Hope the same went for your team!

Wish you success in future endeavours, especially your dreams with the animals!

Dear Yu Yin,

It is indeed a module that people give a weird look to when told about it. I agree with you totally, that communication is not an easy task, despite it being a skill that everybody knows.

It is good to hear that you had a chance to practice what you read in the book. Having practical applications always help in reinforcing the information that is being fed to us.

I wish you all the best in your applications and your interviews. Your presentation has left me with a strong impression of your confidence and your ability to convey your thoughts and opinions effectively to the audience. I believe that you will be able to successfully impress your future employers as well!
